Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-85 in DeKalb County Leaves One Dead, All Lanes Reopen

DeKalb County, Georgia (June 19, 2026) – All northbound lanes of Interstate 85 in DeKalb County have reopened after a fatal multi-vehicle crash involving a box truck, pickup truck, SUV, and a tanker led to a major fire and traffic shutdown early Sunday, according to police.
Authorities reported that officers initially responded around 1:20 a.m. to a traffic incident on I-85 northbound near Shallowford Road involving a box truck and a Ford F-150. Investigators later determined that the box truck was following too closely before rear-ending the pickup truck. After the initial impact, the box truck came to a stop in the right lane and shoulder, and its driver fled the scene on foot.
The crash scene escalated when, at approximately 2:11 a.m., additional vehicles became involved. While emergency responders and police were managing traffic in the area, a Ford Excursion traveling in the second lane from the left struck the disabled F-150, causing it to spin into another lane. A semi-tanker traveling in the third lane then collided with the pickup truck, resulting in a fire.
Emergency crews responded to the multi-vehicle collision and confirmed one fatality at the scene. The crash led to the closure of all northbound lanes on I-85 for several hours while cleanup and investigation efforts were underway.
The Georgia State Patrol and DeKalb County Police are continuing their investigation to determine the full sequence of events and contributing factors.
